Home Again, Home Again Jiggidy Jig

Beautiful picture I found

It’s a long trip from Westport, NY to Atlanta, GA. We left at 8:30 am and got home around 7:00 pm last night. I weighed in this morning and I AM up 5 pounds – the scales were only a pound off. So I’m getting back to normal – making my steel cut oatmeal, drinking my morning glass of water and packing up my vitamins for the week.

Speaking of vitamins – I did pretty well on those while I was gone. Taking the little daily packets and putting them in the middle of the table at the house in Westport helped. And as soon as I took the morning lot, I put them in my pocket for the afternoon ones. STILL haven’t managed to get all my iron tablets. I’m now trying them in the mornings before I have anything else. We’ll see how that goes.

I don’t seem too bent out of shape about the five pounds. I am not sure if that is real progress or insanity. On the one hand, accepting that I can’t be on track and perfect every day is a step forward. But gaining 5 pounds in one week is huge – it takes me 2-4 weeks to lose that much new weight. I suppose it is because I don’t think I have set myself back a month. Those recently gained pounds come back off fairly quickly.  And I had a lovely time. The small indulgences make me feel more inclined to get back on track than to keep going towards the dark side.

In the past, I would do the opposite. I ate whatever I wanted when I was home and then I would pretend, to myself and anyone who would listen, while I was on vacation, that I always ate very carefully and healthfully. Then go completely insane when I got home or even at night when no one was around. This way is much healthier. More sane. Sanity is good.

So  now I am going to pack up some protein powder to take to work. In fact, I think I will haul my magic bullet to the office and make frozen smoothies all week. Some greek yogurt, some frozen berries, a little water and ice and I will have fabulous taste treats and can sip, sip, sip my way back to 178.

  1. So glad you had a great trip! Two thoughts: those five pounds are more than likely water weight (primarily) from eating high sodium foods and travel. Alot of women hold onto extra water while driving, flying, etc. I’ll bet that you lose it within 3 days. Any takers? lol

Re: iron pills. Since being diagnosed with severe anemia earlier this year I’ve made it my business to figure out how the iron works. I tried to take the ones recommended by my PCP in the morning with a shot of OJ. After 6 weeks of that my iron was only up by .1. Further research indicated that not only shouldn’t you take iron anytime close to having food that is calcium rich (thinking most protein powders, milk, yogurt, etc) but also eggs have been shown to severely reduce the effectiveness of iron pills. Just some thoughts.

I’m now taking my iron at night when I’m ready to stop eating anything else – so 8:30 or 9pm. The high dosage lemon lime flavor from Bariatric Advantage tastes great and I suck on it like a lozenge, takes forever to dissolve and then nothing else tastes right after. Good stopping point for the day! lol
Here’s to a new week back on track!

  2. Good girl. What have you told me? “Forgive yourself and get back on track. That’s what I am doing with my after the wedding eats. Started today by juicing….so healthy and my hair was so great when I was doing that. And I may just make some oatmeal also.
So the magic bullet makes great smoothies, eh? Hmmmm.ay look on Craig’s list for one
