I visited Green Mountain at Fox Run for the first time over 10 years ago. I learned so much and for the first time in my life, made the connection between what was going on in my head and my heart with what I was putting in my mouth. It would take me longer to grasp that I had to put that together with exercise to make real progress – but that just means I’m a slow learner and didn’t always learn what I was taught!
They are such a wonderful organization. For decades they have been telling us that diets don’t work – changing your life and the way you think about food does. I know they wouldn’t have advocated that I have weight loss surgery, they really believe that slowly and surely is the way to go. But I think that what I learned there helped me with my weight loss surgery and this new life that I’ve built.
Today I got an offer in the mail for a discounted visit and it made me want to go back there. To take a week or two and focus 24 x 7 on my head and my heart and that connection between body and spirit. To bundle up every morning and walk down and then back up the “big hill”. To come into the breakfast room and have a toasted english muffin, with sliced tomato and cheddar cheese and a piece of fruit. Or to take a bowl of oatmeal and add some fresh fruit. To sit by the window and look out over the mountains and enjoy knowing that I had moved my body and was now feeding it what it needed.
I would love to have sessions with Dr. Marsha again. She was my first weight loss psychologist – helped me get control of the binging and compulsive eating for the first time in my life. To recognize it, to learn some strategies for avoiding it and when it happened, to understand why I was doing it and how to stop before I hurt myself.
I would love to try Pilates or one of the other exercise classes. Work on my yoga or tai chi. Take the bus and join the group at the outdoor hot pool and swim in hot, boiling water with snow falling on my hair.
I would love to sit around by the fire in the evenings, putting together a puzzle – the physical kind with my hands while my head worked out whatever puzzle was in my head. The gentle murmur of voices from the other women there comforted me and reminded me that I could join the group at any time or continue to work in silence.
I would love one of the healthy cooking classes – going into the center’s kitchen and learning to make homemade stock and skim off the fat. Or fabulous soups and chilis to comfort and warm and nurture without a lot of fat or salt or sugar.
If you ever wanted to do this, now is the time. Click the link below to find out more or see further below for a sample schedule.
It could change your life. It changed mine.
